Eddie Royal Close to Signing
Eddie Royal has had an up and down career with the Denver Broncos and will likely be playing for a new team in 2012. The oft-injured possession receiver has been pretty hot in free agency however, with rumors of him being courted by the San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jaguars recently found the starting receiver in Laurent Robinson, but could certainly use some added weapons for Blaine Gabbert (or Chad Henne) next season. With room under the cap and a receiver friendly head coach calling their plays don’t rule out the Jags.
The same could be said for the Washington Redskins too, however. John Keim of the Washington Examiner has reported that the Redskins will be pursuing Royal. With all the latest signings in Washington, Royal could be tempted to play for Shannahan and, presumably, Robert Griffin III. The Redskins crowded receiving corps could also be a reason for Royal NOT to sign there. The Skins would likely have to go into the season with Leonard Hankerson, Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, Jabar Gaffney, Santana Moss AND Eddie Royal all on the team. Seems like too many pass catchers, not enough thrown balls.
The team most likely to sign Royal however, is the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers are reported to be making a big push to bring Royal to Southern California and a contract may already be being discussed. The Chargers lost Vincent Jackson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier, but did sign Robert Meachem from the New Orleans Saints. Needless to say, the duo of Meachem and second-year receiver Vincent Brown will not be able to replace the skills of Vincent Jackson. Adding one more talented receiver to the mix could alleviate some of the pressure from quarterback Phillip Rivers though.
